I got an email from Vic last night. The relevant parts:

"I'm sure most of you have heard about the severe earthquake that happened
about 100 miles south of Lima last night. That is about 500 miles north of
here. Sorry I didn't send out a note earlier. There was no problem here in
Arequipa where I was, but we felt the house move for what seemed like a
long time. The said it could be felt in Lima for 2 minutes.

The most damage was done near Ica and Chincha, along the coastal area. The
current death toll is 510, with many hundreds of people still missing. A
wall of the prison in Chincha collapsed and about 600 prisioners escaped,
only 29 have be recaptured. There was much destruction of houses and other
buildings, as well as damage to the Pan American Highway, which hampered
getting relief and rescue workers to the scene.

Thank you for your concern, and especially your prayers for the injured
and the families of those who were killed."

For those who don't know, Vic hike the PCT a couple years ago, and a large
part of it some years before. He now is working in Peru and offers tours
at http://www.adventurecotahuasi.com .
