I found for the first couple of weeks I had to force myself to eat. I was carrying far to much food per meal. After that I was starving all of the time and had to limit myself at each meal so as to make the food last. Then gorge at every town. Check in, shower, eat, shower, eat then sleep. I still ended up losing 15+ pounds by the end of the hike and I'm a skinny guy to start with.

It is estimated that a through hiker burns about 6000 calories per day
on his hike. Do you carry enough food to consume 6000 calories per day,
or do you carry less, and make up the difference during town stops?

I know the answer is different for every hiker, but I am interested in
getting a rough idea how many ounces/calories per day a typical through
hiker carries.
