You do need a permit to climb Mt. Whitney, even if starting from Kennedy
Meadows or points further south. The good news is that the quotas
shouldn't affect you, as they apply primarily to those starting in the
Inyo National Forest. Still, get your permit early to be safe, from the
jurisdiction your hike starts in, in this case the Sequoia National
Forest. That permit would be good for your entire hike.

Even thruhikers need a permit to climb Whitney. The only difference is
that those hiking 500 miles of PCT in a single trip can get a thruhike
permit from the PCTA, including a Whitney permit if needed.

The best source of online info for Mt. Whitney is the message board run
by the Whitney Portal Store: Go to www.whitneyportalstore.com
<http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/> and click on "Message Board."
