[pct-l] bear canisters

This is true as I recently spoke to a ranger that is involved with The Sierra Wild Bear organization. He said that there were also incidents of bears chewing through the bag on at least two occasions last year. We used the URsack in August 2006 on the JMT with the aluminum liner and if not tied properly will be carried off by bears very quickly!!! Even when tied properly the bears were very curious about the Ursack. It was chewed on, sat on, and a gapping small opening was made with no success of reaching the food. Every few nights the bears were busy figuring out a new way to retrieve the food. This made for a disruptive night for us. And at a pretty costly price for the canister I would not use it again even thought we own them. They are about a pound lighter but not worth the risk.

Currently, no the Ursack is not ok. The
"conditionally approved" status is no longer on this
website:
http://www.sierrawildbear.gov/foodstorage/approvedcontainers.htm
If you read the Ursack site again,
http://www.ursack.com/ursack-update.htm
it mentions two different Ursack fabrics (one is
stronger than the other), and it also says that Ursack
is meeting with the SIBBG on March 8 to try to
reinstate the "conditinally approved" status of the
green fabric with aluminum liner.
Keep watching the websites. Things change frequently.
