Sounds like a case of "What If" imprisonment.

Don't let the 'what if _____ happens' keep you at home. Go take a hike by 
yourself, overnight or otherwise. Take your common sense and be prepared for 
condtions. 20 million Californians, who knows how many lions and 1 news 
story in 2 weeks.

I think the odds are wildly in your favor. :)

I'm a  (relatively) new hiker (day hikes only, no overnights since Boy 
Scouts 45 yrs. ago) and I'm a little hesitant at times to go since I go 
alone and there has been quite an increase in mountain lion attacks, 
sightings and stalkings (another one just two weeks ago) here in California. 
Any opinions, good areas, trails, sightings, cheap prices on bazookas, 
advice???
