I have a system to stay fairly dry on the trail. I figure you can never stay completely dry, but you should be dry enough that exposure is not an issue. Here is what I use:
- GoLite Chrome Dome Umbrella
- GossamerGear.com Micropore rain jacket and SpinnChaps.
- water resistent storm socks
- Gortex mitts with an inner glove

This system works fine and is light. Of course, I have my basic hiking clothing of SunPrecautions.com Super Ventilated shirt and hat with full drape. This makes it very nice to hike in heat, cold, and rain. Great hiking clothing in all weather conditions.

The key to me is to get your rain/cold weather gear on soon enough. Too many hikers wait too long before they put on their gear.
