[pct-l] PocketMail dud?

hmmm, I just got a PocketMail device from eBay, since it had batteries in it I thought I would give it a go now before getting home and reading up on everything. I flipped out the speaker, pressed the button on the front and all I get is one quiet beep (from an internal speaker, not form the one that goes next to the phone). Shouldn't it be hissing and squealing and generally trying to contact the server? I know it hasn't got an active account but Ithought it would have to contact the server to check. Incase it was working really quietly I did dial the access number but the voice on the ither end said it wasn't getting anything from my device. Some people here have much more experience with these things, is there a really obvious first step I missed?
