I used the Moutain Smith Ghost, which was rated at 3100 cubic inches (51.6
liters). I think it varies what size people need. Depending on Clothes, and
food requirements and lets not forget the tent weight/size.

You would need about 1.7 litters to a pound if I did the math right.

I did get 43 LB in the pack for the 12 day section in the Sierra, but that was buldging at the seams.

You said your base weight was 14 LB's or so, but that doesn't include food. Food will be about 2-3 LB per person per day. That being the case, you would need to know much food you are eating a day and what is the longest section you would do.

If your longest section was 8 days, at 3LB's a day, and you had a base weight of 14LB's ===38LB's pack weight ( I omited water for simplicity)

multiply pack weight by 1.7 ~=65 Litters.

60 litters is close enough for us, so this should be suitable as a average
size. Mine was 53 liters...

Why not just try going on a week long backpack with the pack your planning on takeing and see if it works for you?

Hello All,

I'm enjoying some "list lingering", just watching and reading and
generally enjoying the comments posted here, but now I have a (dumb,
great, idiotic, bumbleheaded, brilliant) question: My cousins and I
are planning to do the PCT in '08, and we've begun training and
gearing up. My base pack weight is somewhere around 12-14 (mostly
agreeable) pounds with my Osprey Crescent 60. On average, what size
of pack have the PCT'ers here carried? Thanks in advance,

B.W. (no trailname...yet)
