Here's some simple US Forestry info on the subject.

To keep the weight down I use the chlorine  (bleach) method.
I only use it where I have doubts about the water............. any doubts at 
all.
I carry a breath refresher dropper bottle that holds almost 3 ml.
Total weight 4 grams.
