You MUST be carrying the IPhone on the trail, or suffer humiliation of being
low tech and out of date!

Say, my 8GB Nano with a black rubber protective case, reflective tape, FM
radio with ear phones, weighs in at whopping 79 grams or 2.8 ounces. I know
the Extreme Ultra Lighters will have a heart attack about that, but for us
Light Weight hikers, that is not too bad at all.

The Solio Universal Hybrid Solar Charger weighs around 5.8 ounces. A little
heavy, but acceptable. My backpack total weight will still be well under 20
pounds for 3 nights/4 days on the trail with everything. No problem.
Thanks for reminding me about the Solio. I had seen it years ago, but had
forgotten about it. The Solio is neat because it has a built in battery to store
the energy. I will just plug the Nano into it at night in the tent.

Then there is the crowd that hates to see/hear any electronic device on the
trail. I am okay with that. I respect that, HYOH.

But to me, if I can hike along with John Muir, Henry Thoreau, Ed Abbey, and
others, I cannot control the excitement to hit the trail. I will be with all
the boys in the Grand Canyon, Sierras, and the PCT. For a half a pound in
gear weight there is no contest. Plus all the music, etc., etc. Yes, the
conversations I will have with my pals as I hike along will be too cool.

What I will really like is to be in my tent at night in a big windy storm
listening to Nano stuff. To cut a little of the noise down, I can use my light
weight noise canceling headphones. Then the storm noise is just in the
background and not thundering in my ears. The best of both worlds. You cannot
beat that on the trail --- nice and warm and dry, plus a menu of entertainment
options both in and outside the tent. I might have a few low sugar brownies
too with my chocolate protein shake just to top things off. The adventure
and fun never ends out there.
