[pct-l] Shoes

I'll echo what Saskia said and offer that the vast majority of the hikers we
see are wearing trail runners. New Balance is a very popular brand, but
then so is Montrail, Vasque, and Solomon. The list goes on.

We also see boots worn, by not many but some. And then there's an even
smaller handful of those who wear my favorite trail footwear: hiking
sandals. I'm a huge Chaco fan, which I wear with socks. They are awesome
for just walking through stream crossings, provided excellent grip and shock
absorption.

Hikers also bring camp shoes (another reason I like Chacos -- they cover
both bases). The hands-down most popular camp shoes are Crocs, which are
decent to hike in for a short stretch. Flip-flops, including homemade
varieties made out of insole liners and some shoe laces or such, are also
common. We like Crocs and wear them around home, but I really didn't care
for them for stream crossings. They were too buoyant, squishy, and felt
like they were going to come off in the swift currents. The Chacos
performed splendidly under these same conditions. Trail runners would also.

Shoes get discussed quite a bit on this list, and you'll find a treasure
trove of brand/model discussions in the PCT-L archives. Also, if you're
wanting opinions on gear, I would highly recommend getting Yogi's PCT
Handbook www.pcthandbook.com . In it she provides the opinions of different
hikers on just about every piece of gear or preferred practices you can
imagine. The on-trail pages are also very helpful and as current as
anything available today.

Good luck with your decision. Half the fun is the planning and preparation,
and all the anticipation. Enjoy.

L-Rod
