I've never checked my backpack before, even going twice to Nepal and back (6 separate flights).? If I have to this time, will all those straps get caught in the conveyor belts?? And are they really going to bust you for matches?

Fuel, matches, and lighters can not go on the airplane, even in checked baggage. 
That includes Esbit tablets. Note that many of the restrictions come not from 
the TSA but rather from the individual airlines. The TSA does not necessarily 
agree with many of these, but does have to enforce them during baggage and 
pre-board inspections. 

Be sure your knife is in your checked bags or be prepared to give it up.
