Unless you're finding the trail in the trees through a snowy
Sierra/Cascades, having a GPS is just a novelty on the PCT.

It's an increasingly popular novelty however.

If you've ever carried one, you'll know that you can make note of exact
locations where you've camped or maybe places that appealed to you. Maybe
there was that obscure dear trail you wanted to explore at a later date.
Having an exact record of your camping locations is a huge thrill months and
years after the fact. Not to mention noting places where trail maintenance
might be needed; public service on the fly.

GPS is also an excellent way to place photos.

As a navigation aid on the PCT, leave it at home. As a means of enhancing
your journey, bring it along, you'll be thrilled you did!
