Brian,

I think your surmises make the most sense, in combination with the
human desire to clump. The KO is likely a contributing factor.  But
until some conscious effort (like no KO or a moved KO) to demonstrate
rightness or wrongness of your surmises, people will focus on the KO
as the root of all evil.  The real 'evil', IMO, is that that takes
focus off of the growing issue of a general overtaxing of resources,
and what might be done about that without screwing everything up.

If angel hostels, water caches, postal services, etc., are gradually
withdrawn because there are simply too many people who all want to do
the same thing at the same time, what happens?  Perhaps those who want
a 1970 experience will be triumphant in the end.
