another thought occurred to me that i don't recall seeing brought up
here before...

what about actively promoting alternate strategies to hiking the entire
trail in one season, other than the classic mex->can nobo? now, i'm not
necessarily talking about just promoting the can->mex sobo thru-hike,
but coming up with creative flip-flop plans that may actually optimize
the weather issues even more ideally than either a nobo or sobo thru-hike.

i haven't given it much thought/analysis, but does anyone have any
specific ideas along these lines that should work out well in an average
weather year? if so, maybe some sort of gathering(s) can be organized
around alternate start dates/places to encourage folks to think out of
the box a bit more.

sure, even if good alternates are suggested, there will always be those
who want the pure one-way thru-hike experience. but as the trail traffic
problem grows, i think many will be interested in looking at alternate
models to disperse things a bit more, especially if it can be shown that
such alternatives can help mitigate weather issues as well as
accommodate a wider range of overall hiking schedules.

thoughts?
