It seems to me that the biggest issue being debated is just how much influence does the ADZPCTKO have on hikers starting date.  Finding the answer to this is actually very simple.

Those hikers who are MOST likely to be influenced by the ADZ date are those who actually show up to it.  So someone needs to make a simple survey and get a few volunteers to give/collect them out at the ADCPCTKO.

Just ask them:
Did the date of the ADZPCTKO influence your starting date?
Why?
If there was no ADZPCTKO, what would you have choosen your starting date to be?

This would be the closest thing to a scientific survey as anyone who was influenced by ADZ would be there.  Other hikers who are known to be on the trail before or after but not at the ADZ can safely be concluded that the ADZ had no influence on their date.
