[pct-l] bears in the pacific NW

Bears are a problem where people are a problem. I live in the PNW out in the forest and have never had any problems. Where I live I can see a bear on average every other day when they first come out of hibernation and through out the summer a couple every week, even on my property. I have never had a problem with bears. Most problems are when people are irresponsible with food. Speaking of I never hang my food, but I always hike with a dog. I did have a bear come up to my tent after walking several miles in the night to get to it ( followed the PCT in the snow) but when it heard the dogs bark it split. I never worry about bears even though I have come within 30 ft of them while they were eating berries. They are more frightened of you than you of them, although you do need to give them plenty of space and respect for you never can predict them. In 2004 when I hiked from Seid valley to white pass WA I think that I saw 5 black bears, never had any issues.

I think it's a matter of how much bear - human interaction exists. We certainly have problem bears in Arizona, so it's not just the Sierras.

Why are bears/humans a problem in very specific parts of the Sierras and not
the Pacific Northwest?
