Appreciate your input Andrea. As I said, I will willingly carry my little guy most of the way. He will be able to sleep in his carrier while I hike. In addition, he'll have 2 homemade sleeping bags.....one synthetic for wet and cold for use during the day in his carrier.....even tho his carrier will have a "roof", and a down bag (kept dry at all times) for in the tent at night. To keep him cool in the desert, I plan on having a "cooling collar" on him (they make vests too) and a moist bandana over most of him. I will be hiking with an umbrella to cover us both. For dangerous fords, he'll be wearing a life jacket, and I may possibly too......since I nearly drowned fording the Kennebec in Maine. BIG fear factor there. I would NEVER expect my dog to carry a pack and I wish others would do the same. He will always be on a lease...which will be attached to my hip belt.

Hope that puts your mind at ease, some, at least.......

dogs arrive here who had their hind ends fail and had to be shipped
out in cars to the vets. The winter hiking here in Washington is rough
on many of the dogs. Remember.....your dog will follow you no matter
how he is physically. He does that because he is loyal and he loves
you. Would you hike the trail in bare feet and wet clothes during the
snowy months ?
