If history with the evacuation and trail closures is consistent ---- the powers to be will allow thru hikers . Specifically in the fires last year on the North side of Rt 10 in section C (white water) made an exception for thru hikers. BUT ....... this fire was very different in evacuations and closures than in O3. In 03 the entire forest was closed until the first snow while this time it was only weeks.

This is how it reads on the SB NF website:

PCT - BLM Whitewater Area Closure does not include PCT through hikers

  &

Pacific Crest Trail - Big Bear Area- The PCT will remain closed from the 3N16/Holcomb Creek crossing on the west side (approx. 2 miles northeast of Crab Flats), to 2N09 (Polique Canyon Rd.) . Little Bear Springs trail camp is closed to public use, due to Butler 2 Fire. A PCT trail reroute is being developed.

Hikers have been road-walking Hwy 2 to the Burkhart trail where you can get back on the PCT. Hopefully there will be similar re-routes in place for other apparent closures that will allow 2008 thru-hikers a chance.

body{font-family: Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:9pt;background-color: #ffffff;color: black;} We've been frantically searching the maps and websites provided. It would appear that the Angeles and Las Padres closures do NOT affect the PCT. The San Bernardino FS website has not been updated (still dated October 5). That said, it currently states:

Pacific Crest Trail - Big Bear Area- The PCT will remain closed from the 3N16/Holcomb Creek crossing on the west side (approx. 2 miles northeast of Crab Flats), to 2N09 (Polique Canyon Rd.) . Little Bear Springs trail camp is closed to public use, due to Butler 2 Fire. A PCT trail reroute is being developed. Likewise, the links provided for the Cleveland do not show PCT closures, but a trip to their site (also not updated) still shows the Hauser Canyon area (start of Section A) as closed. Whether it is to remain closed through November 2008 is unclear from the information provided.

Portions of the Angeles, Cleveland, Los Padres and San Bernardino forests will be given a year or longer to recover from fires.

Do any of these areas affect the PCT. Will the trail be open?
