Actually the lost hiker's body in 05 that you speak was found a year later.   Some lost tourists used his matches to light a forest fire so that the helicopters would find them.

    I live in Southern California and have hiked all year round.  The trick is to hike the desert in the winter and the mountains in the summer.  If you are going to through hike be aware that the snow in the Mt's can last till June.  The year before last,  a PCT hiker disappeared between Devils Slide Trail and Black Mtn. Rd above the town of Idyllwild.  Last I heard, his body has never been found.  There is likely to be Snow in the San Gorgonios and San Gabriel's too.  So pack and dress accordingly.  Snow hiking can be tricky.  I have had trouble distinguishing hikeing trails from game trails in the snow.
