While the road is closed from Vincent Gap west to Little Jimmy, it's open to
Wrightwood, east. Hitching a ride into town from Inspiration Point, rather
that walking down the steep Acorn trail has been preferable the last couple
years. Usually if a hiker plans to get to Inspiration Point in the morning,
someone (usually locals) will stop to pick up thru-hikers. Lots of locals
are up there recreating and are happy to give you a lift. No guarantees,
though. Mt Hardware does have the Trail book which lists locals that will
take you back up to the trailhead.

Can't help with Holcombe Creek, but the highway closure Yogi references
should not be an issue unless you are trying to get to/from Los Angeles
through the San Gabriel Mountains OR you to get off the trail on Hwy 2
before they get the snow plows (if needed) up there and open the road that
goes down toward Wrightwood. If the road is not open and you pop out at
Grassy Hollow or Vincent Gap to try to get a hitch back down toward
Wrightwood, you'd have to walk the highway down. Many hikers use the Acorn
Trail to get to Wrightwood; it's steep, but it's direct.

Hwy 2 has also been closed more long-term between Vincent Gap and the
parking area for Little Jimmy/PCT crossing due to landslide damage, which
cuts off the through-mountain route from LA to Wrightwood. There are other
ways around, if LA is where you need to get to or from.

Mountain Hardware in Wrightwood may be able to provide current road
conditions.

My old Yogis guidebook says that hitching into Wrightwood may be problematic
due to the highway being closed. Is it still closed? Is hitching the best
option for Wrightwood?

My second question: I have tried calling the Ranger station regarding the
reroute near Holcombe Creek and was refered to a person who apparently
doen't answer their phone. My main question is how many miles does the
reroute add? My understanding is that the reroute is 30 miles but noone has
been able to tell me how many miles that routs around. I'm guessing 10
miles for a net addition of 20 miles but its just a guess. Related to that
is the water situation on the reroute.

I'm leaning towards ignoring the reroute but I don't have enough info and
cant get a hold of anyone who knows at the ranger station.
