My son Andy has used a SPOT on several trips with good results since  
January.  It is approximately 2/3 the size and weight of my ARC PLB.   
Besides clipping to a waist belt, it also clips to a pack shoulder  
strap.  My tip would be to set it down when turning it on and sending  
an I'm OK/coordinates position.  Leave it on at least 20+ seconds to  
transmit.
