Tent type is defiantly a personal preference item. But I can tell you from personal
experience that even the most proficient hiker can get into trouble when it starts
snowing horizontally above ten thousand feet. A free standing tent is always a safe
way to go. I personally use a small tarp. I carry a ultra lite bivy sac as a backup for
the Sierras, then switch to a large tarp for the Washington rain.
