Of course, another few ways to give back to the trail via the PCTA besides on going membership include:

1)  Set aside in your thru hiking budget a generous one time donation to the PCTA.
2)  In the year or two leading up to the hike, make generous donations.
3)  Post hike, once you're back to work and back on your feet financially, make a generous donation.

Of course, each person must determine for themselves what 'generous' is, given their own situation.

For those that live near the trail and don't have money, but do have a strong back, an option is always volunteering for trail maintenance activities.  Here in Washington, the WTA (www.wta.org) usually has several work parties per year somewhere on the PCT, usually including both day long and week long.

I'm sure, with little effort, organizations in Oregon and California that do maintenance on the PCT can be located and would be more than glad to have more volunteer labor.
