I carry a pocket-like thing that is indeed about the size of a large shirt pocket. Mine, made by Lowe, is designed to be slid onto a waist belt, but I just pin mine onto a shoulder strap. It's plenty big to hold the day's map (or guidebook pages), camera (Blackberry for me), compass, eyeglass cloth, pen, knife, a couple of toiletries, a few pieces of candy, and a small partridge in an even smaller pear tree. I wouldn't leave home without it.
