South bound is the way to go. Especially if you are agoraphobic like
myself, less people. The Sierras are a far better hike later in the year
in my opinion. No snow and less mosquitoes. But you will encounter
almost daily thunderstorms. And if you are walking slow, snow could
become a issue. October/November is the driest time of year here
in the south. All of the seasonal springs will be dry and most of the
water caches will have been picked through by north bounders. Water
rationing/planning will be a priority. And lastly December can be
snow hiking for some of the last few mountain ranges you will
encounter. When I hiked south bound it was a "very dry" year for
Washington and the North. So I started very early and thus had a
far greater weather window. That is why most people hike south to
north. The weather window is much kinder, most years, for north
bound hikers.
