[pct-l] PCTA Membership

Good afternoon, All,

Another good reason to support the PCTA is the Thru-Hiker Permit. This
permit is offered to members free-of-charge, and to non-members at a mere
pittance, and is it is of inestimatable value. Think for a moment about how
much time and aggravation this one all-encompassing permit saves each
PCT hiker.

The PCT traverses many, many separate jurisdictions among the National
Forests, Federal Wildernesses, National Parks, and lands administered by the
BLM -- not to mention the States' land and private holdings -- each of which
could have individual and disparate rules, requirements, and permits.
Currently most wilderness use permits are self-issuing at trailheads or at
administration offices but just think how uncertain and onerous a long trip
would be if you had to hike miles off the PCT just to get the latest
information and permits. Such would likely make violators out of most of
us.

The Thru-Piker Permit evolved through the cooperation of all the top-level
agencies and the PCTA, but since the PCTA administers the program it
rightfully deserves to be the focus of credit. I say the permit alone is
worth the cost of membership even if no other benefit accrues.
