[pct-l] Tent for Two

We started with the Cloudburst Tarp Tent -- single-wall, 38 oz, about $ 250
-- which allowed plenty of room for two. Nice feature was the bathtub
floor. Problem was the zipper jammed frequently. We even sent it back once
from the trail for repairs and upon receipt it jammed again. We met several
hikers with the same problem. We eventually shipped it home and used the
Big Agnes Seed House (under $ 200 from REI), a bit smaller and heavier than
the Tarp Tent but much sturdier and no zipper issues. Without the fly you
can gaze at the stars through the mesh. Sweet.

I'm looking for a two person tent for hiking the Sierras. I'm trying to go
light without breaking my budget.

I've been looking at trying to find a used tarptent, but I'm starting to
have my doubts about finding one...
Consequently I've started looking at other tents.

The ones that I've really looked at are the Mountain hardwear lightpath 2
Eureka Zeus Exo
REI quarter dome (older style)

Basically, I'm trying to stay light and sub $150

Oh, and I've tried convincing my partner to use a tarp with me, but thats a
no go, and if she's willing to help carry a tent, then I'm more than willing
to share the benefits of few bugs.

Yes, they had arrived in June. Their supplies had to be brought in by
helicopter though, as the horse packers couldn?t get in to drop their
supplies as they would in a normal year.

hi adam, you'll find once you hit the trail that you will meet others
and naturally fall into a partnership or group with like-minded people
who share your pace and style. it's just the nature of how this trail
(and thru-hiking in general) works. formal partnerships arranged in
advance between strangers just don't tend to work out on the pct. don't
hesitate to start solo. i guarantee you'll begin to forge many strong
friendships within the first few days of your hike.

this all depends on when you start. if you start way before or behind
the curve, then you'll meet fewer folks, maybe none for the first few
days. but if you start, say, anywhere between mid april and mid may,
you're gonna meet people, probably the first day. and if you start on
the adzpctko weekend (last weekend in april), you'll be right in the
middle of "the herd," and may actually wish for LESS company.

just one random example- last year i delivered a hiker to the southern
terminus, and, as usual that time of year, there was another hiker being
delivered by someone else at the very same time. they quickly introduced
themselves to each other and decided to set off together... and ended up
hiking almost the entire pct together, becoming extremely close friends
in the process. this is sort of an extreme example, but suffice it to
say that if you're looking to make friends and meet people to hike with
on the pct, you will have no problem whatsoever.

I am planning for 2010 and this is something I always

you'll get over this VERY quickly. trust me! more importantly, trust
YOURSELF! :)

Now that you mention it, it was the 6th of July, since I had come back up
Kersarge Pass after the celebration in Independence on the 5th, and camped
one night at Charlotte Lake, where this ranger was then stationed. I met
him on his patrol at Glen Pass. He said that he and the other rangers been
there since mid-June, noting the need for chopper drops because of the snow.
Backcountry rangers rock.

In the hunter, gatherer sense man has always 'affected the balance'. Man has

been removed from the natural process completely and replaced by 'policy' in

some areas. Choose the human intervention that suits you best...

The current, popular policy says, "bears and people will coexist without
conflcit in the same 1000 square foot area." Time will test this cartoonish,

un-natural concept; especially with the continuing commercialization of
National Parks.

More civilization, less wild life. More wild life, less civilization. Do the

math, you can't have it both ways.

Bear canisters are not even remotely the answer.

Northern Califonia has solved it's bear problem. Bears are wary of humans,
as it should be in the natural order. The local population is pressing for
hunting permits during 'Tourist Season'. In the mean time, even the bears
know to run from a lumbering RV with a geriatric driver behind the wheel.
(tic)

-postholer

<<<<
...Although bears are hunted throughout California, the stats indicate that
most are in northern California rather than the Sierra Nevada.

Btw, Wandering Bob usually makes lots of sense, but I had to scratch my head
about his suggestion that the way to solve the problem of "man [trying] to
fool around with that natural balance" is for man to fool around even more
by "immediately start[ing] a massive reduction" of the bear population.

-Taildragger,

Ken and I like the Black Diamond (formerly Bibler) HiLight at 1# 14 oz,
poles another 8 oz. Ventilation is good but it is not a good AT drenching
multi-day rain tent. The combo is light but not the least expensive.

The tent is single wall, free standing with internal poles so you climb in
then set up in bad weather. I may be wrong but I think tents are like rain
gear. Nothing will keep you totally dry in an all day gully washer.

Tent http://www.bdel.com/gear/hilight.php
Poles http://www.fibraplex.com/tentpoles.htm

We know pilots that are "ounce weenies" who have calculated the cost of each
ounce reduced. Your wallet gets lighter as the gear gets lighter.

I just received my Refuge last week. I weighed it (including the stuff sack)
on a very accurate scale at work and it came in at 25.8 oz..first time that
ever happened with me...Tents, bags, and the like have always seemed to be
an oz or two heavier than advertised..

Great job on the tent...

If you are not extremely concerned about weight (dividing it up among two
hikers makes it preety reasonable), then I'll second the SD Clip Flashlight
at a bit under 5 lbs

or the non SL (super light) version of the SL2..The Big Agnes Seedhouse 2
weighs in at around 4 lbs and change with poles, stakes and everything.
else.. And they are cheap.

Here is a link to an eBay store that carries them..

Looks like quite a few of us starting at that date 14th or 15th. There may
be an actual "group" of us, formally and informally. An easy paced Section
A. Easing in our feet, testing our gear, and making gear adjustments at
Warner Springs.

Yeah, I'll be out there on the 14th or 15th. Taking my time, planning
to reach Kennedy Meadows first few days of June (2nd, 3rd or 4th) but
beyond that without any serious time or distance goals. I guess more
people are starting with me than I thought. I figured I'd only see a
couple other people until the ADZPCTKO people caught up with me.

Good evening, Lon,

For the slip-resistant surface on my axe I applied a product called "3M
Safety-Walk", which is heavy duty, sticky-backed, sandpaper used for walkway
surfaces. A local hardware store had various sizes and shapes, so I got a
package of 2"x 9" pieces which I trimmed to 6" for installation. Each 6"
strip weighs 0.25 oz. A strip was applied longitudinally to both the front
and the back of the shaft. Each strip wrapped around the sides of the shaft
leaving only a 1/8" gap down each side uncovered. After applying the strips
I temporarily wrapped the entire area tightly with nylon cord to encourage
the adhesive to adapt to, and retain, its new curved shape.

I really like it, but if I had to chop barehanded for an extended period its
roughness might irritate my skin. With even the thinnest gloves it can be
appreciated but not felt. It's an outdoor product, and after some use and
soaking it hasn't warn or loosened.

Enjoy,

Steel-Eye

day at that time.

Dream on!

I've hiked north from the border a half dozen times now, starting anywhere
from early april to mid may and I've never seen less than 5 or 6 different
hikers a day all the way up to hiker heaven.
Ok, most of them were passing me, but still, unless you start in march,
it'll
be 'crowded' out there...

for those like myself who like to listen to mp3 audiobooks while they
walk, here's a great site with the stated goal of making freely shared
recordings of all public domain books:

http://librivox.org/

since the readers are all volunteer (anyone can join in), you get a
range of quality, but many of them are quite professional. i'm currently
listening to a john muir book and the reader is excellent.

Hello all,

I am reading that people tend to wear 4-6 pairs of shoes. Thoughts?

I have also read that feet sometimes swell/expand, sometimes even a 1/2
size larger. Thoughts?

So I am thinking of buying replacement shoes along the trail to ensure
that I have the proper size. But I cringe at the thought of breaking in a
new pair of shoes on trail. Thoughts?

Thank you for your thoughts,
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen
>I have also read that feet sometimes swell/expand, sometimes even a 1/2

There are a few people whose feet expanded 1/2 size. There are MANY more
than that whose feet expanded a full size or more.
My first time I wore shoes my regular size for the first 110 miles. My feet
never recovered the entire season.

I buy my shoes 1 1/2 to 2 sizes bigger. If i stay below 35 miles a day i
don't get blisters.

>But I cringe at the thought of breaking in a

The number one solution is not in the shoes. If my feet are "broken in" or
conditioned maybe 70 days in advance, the hazards of breaking in a new pair
of shoes is greatly reduced.
I have never had to worry about breaking in shoes, especially if they fit
well to begin with. I buy lightweight trailrunners that are flexible and
oversized. I bought three pair in December. I am "breaking them in"
anyway. I got a defective shoe of a type i had been using last year that
about killed me. When my new shoes are shipped to me they will be test
driven.

So I do shoes in advance, 2 sizes too big, flexible trail runners, enough
room to move from side to side and never laced with any tension. Your
mileage may vary.

Oh, I also buy shoes by phone or online and have them shipped ahead, but
that's how I got that defective pair... careful.
