Ken,
Yup,......You did save a few hundred feet of vertical and a few miles by 
taking the bus from  Red's Mdw. to Agnew Mdw. instead of hiking.
My question is, is your goal to hike the trail or to ride the bus when 
ever possible?  Because, if it is the later you could have taken the bus 
all the way to Tuolumne Mdw.,  skipped Island Pass and Donohue Pass and 
saved several thousand feet of vertical and many more miles.

 Enjoy your bus ride.
