Hey Jordan!

You should be walking, walking, walking. Prepare your feet for the hot
desert ground. You don't need a heavy pack, 10-12 lbs is fine. Just get out
there and walk. 8-10-12 miles at a shot if you have the time. Work up to
that distance if you're not there. Take rest days and let your body heal as
needed. Walk on a natural surface in trail runners. It's good for the feet
and ankle strength. Walk on a warm or hot surface, periodically, if you can,
it will prepare your feet for the heat. You want some callouses as a hedge
against blisters.

Weights are good for bone density, but that's something you need to be
consistent about long before you hike. Weight training is a hedge against
stress fractures.

Cardio is great for all those hill climbs. Keep at it.

If you're 'average', you don't need extra body fat. It's only extra weight
you have to carry. Maintain your weight thru diet on the trail. Don't start
big and end thin, maintain your weight. It can be tough, I know.

Someone once said, "Cardio adds longevity to life and weight training adds
quality to life." The same will apply to your physical self on the trail.

Here's my rock solid training regimen:

Yours will vary. Do what works for you!
