I
Did someone mention a Rain Shell made by Montbell?

I thought i heard this but I'm not finding anything that sounds like it
would serve well as a rain shell in a downpour.

If it exists, could someone post the specific model name and maybe a
 url.

I am pretty happy with my Montbell rain jacket. Here is the info:

I add a twenty pound bag of rice that comes in a burlap sack. I bought it
from a local ethnic foods store. Ten bucks; it even has a handle. It fits
in a day pack and with added water bottles and is about 25lbs. The nice
part is that it conforms to the shape of your back.

Attention: 2008 thru-hikers - regarding the second season of the PCT Perpetual Bear Canister Loan Program...
There are still a 'few' bear canisters available to borrow from both the 'permanent' inventory and the "one-on-one" loan system...

2008 PCT thrus - are you on a tight budget or have limited finances, or are you coming from overseas or from an area of the US and won't have ANY use for a bear canister after your PCT thru-hike?
You may be able to borrow a bear canister for your PCT thru-hike for 'free' (except return shipping)...
In 2007, 13 bear canisters were available for loan ('free' except for return shipping) to nobo PCT thrus... This 'program' started somewhat by accident - I had posted to pct-l offering my bear canister for free to a cash-impaired 2007 PCT thru... I received many replies in very short order - so what to do?... Plan B: I asked numerous vendors to donate bear canisters and many did so - also received some private donations...

For 2008 a few more bear canisters were added to the 'permanent' inventory... There will also be a "one-on-one" loan system in which someone can loan their bear canister to a thru without donating it to the permanent inventory - the lender would ship it when/where the thru requested, the thru borrowing it would return ship the bear canister directly to the lender...

This program is currently NOT done entirely on a 'first come - first served basis', but rather on a show of 'some' need, however small...
For those that can easily afford to purchase a bear canister, BearVault now has an excellent purchase program (formerly a rental program) - a BV400 for $65 including shipping to Kennedy Meadows or Tuolumne Meadows or Echo Lake (that's the lowest price on the internet when shipping is included, plus they send it to you right on the PCT) - see for full info... (BTW, I have no affiliation nor vested interest with BearVault - other than they were, indeed, very generous contributors to the loan program in '07!)

If you think you might qualify for a 'free' bear canister loan for your 2008 PCT thru-hike, please contact me off-list via email (there are still a 'few' canisters available) - and please briefly explain your reason or need, however small, to borrow a bear canister for your PCT thru-hike... I'll be glad to answer any of your questions regarding the loan program... Thank you.

Happy trails!!!

I forgot to mention in my original post that the knee straps weigh 3.5 ounces each.

My humble apologies.

Dana Law is Speaking Tomorrow at the La Jolla, CA Library.

It's mentioned in this article the San Diego Reader just did on him.

http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2008/feb/06/hilite/

Dana has been involved with the PCT, PCT-L and the PCT Section of the Sierra Club for some time.

Thanks Wheew.

One thing to note about the maps, that I have not done a good job
explaining, and have been getting questions about, relates to water
report locations.

I have waypoints for almost all the water report locations listed at
http://www.4jeffrey.net/pct/ and they are printed on the maps and they
are (or soon will be) available as a .gpx download.

These waypoint names start with "WR" followed by the "Miles NoBo"
listed in the water report. For example WR213, WR222, WR226, etc. So
when you see waypoint WR213 printed on a map, you refer to the water
report to find out that this is the Mesa Wind Farm.

I also have waypoints for some water locations not found in the water
report. Most of these are water I found in June 2007 between Kennedy
Meadows and Crabtree Meadows where the water report does not cover.
These waypoint names begin with "WA" followed by the estimated trail
mile. Currently you have to reference my waypoint lists to find out
what these are, but I will probably update the Section G map to
include more information on the map about these waypoints.

All of these waypoints are recorded by my GPS while standing near the
water, so they should be accurate.
