L-Rod's suggestion to support Trail Fest, an event that occurs at a time
other than when hikers will be starting on the the trail, may be the best
solution for a big group get-together that will not result in the herd effect.

Something is not getting through. If you have 300 hikers starting within a
few weeks, you're going to have a herd. Not having the KO won't change this.

I'll ask one more time then I'll be done, given the water situation down
south, the heat of the desert, and the snow pack in the Sierras in an average
snow year, with an average hiking speed of 15-20 miles per day at the outset of
a thru-hike, what's the best starting date?
