We mail our "precious" SD's using a tracking number. The extra charge is 
definitely worth not losing photos!

I didn't try to download from the camera.  I just got a handful of extra SD
cards and mailed the full ones home with my journal notes from trail towns.
The SDs would be downloaded at home and returned in the next available
resupply box.  It worked for me.  I use medium-size SDs:  Too small and
they're a pain.  Too large and the risk of loss is high if something should
happen to one in the mail.
