Another thing to try is to rub lip balm into the area several times a day.

I use Neosporin on my feet in the winter. Per Gadget's suggestion I bought 
neoprene socks for water crossings and rain. When you resupply, buy some 
cooking oil - olive, vegetable, etc. Pour some into a plastic bag and soak 
your feet. You probably wouldn't do this at home, but works on the trail.
