An outstanding hike is from the Red's Meadows area (Mammoth), to Yosemite
Valley.

Yosemite has a bus system (YARTS) that goes around to Mammoth Mountain
Inn, dropping you off at the spot where the shuttle down the hill to
Devil's Postpile and Red's Meadow is located, including the hiker's
campground.

I've done this trip, using public transit, and it works well, if you do
the planning to make it come out.

As I recall, Amtrak train, then bus to the Valley, tram to the valley
backpackers' campground, spend the day around the Valley, catch the bus to
Mammoth, stayed in the Mammoth Mountain Inn, caught the shuttle down the
next morning, hiked over 6 days to the Valley, caught the Amtrak bus back.
