I surprised no one has mentioned a heating the glue method of debinding the guidebooks.  Using a microwave or a clothing iron you heat the glue up to soften it(not melting it as that makes it messy) and then pulling the cover off and the pages apart(may require a few reheatings).  You can google book debinding for scanning and find several instructions for getting the cover and pages seperated.  Most instructions are related to manga(foreign comics) as there is a large hobbyist effort to scan/translate foreign comics into english.

Apparently there are also ways of rebinding books as well, some involve hairdryers and others involve adding new glue and making a homemade book press.  So it would be possible to put back a book together after your done with it if you really wanted to.
