Famously, Joe Walker led a party across the Sierras (present day Yosemite, north of current paved road) in October 1833. They had a terrible time with the snow and survived by eating many of their horses. Those contemplating a winter traverse of the PCT should consider the advantages of doing it as an equestrian.
