KMurray's suggestion for a loop trip out of Horseshoe Meadow is very good.  I suggest you also consider Agnew Meadow (just N of Reds Meadow and W of Mammoth) to Tuolemne Meadows.  About 27 miles, very easy transportation (although a farther drive for you, & not a loop trip), and some of the best scenery on the entire trail.  

SoCal in July, especially the desert, will be way too hot.
