I've never understood that argument. Folks always seem to fall back on it.

If you allow folks access to public lands you have one of two choices, build 
a modest network of trails for common access or allow 100,000 people to 
bushwack 100,000 paths into that area. Which has the least impact?

Same goes for removing bear boxes. Which has the least negative impact? 
Removing bear boxes and dispersing the crowds is an excellent idea.
