Go to REI.com and see the SPOT.  Pretty neat product for the trail and  under 
8 ounces.  If I were a solo female hiker on the trail I think I would  have 
some pepper spray and the SPOT Satellite Personal Messenger.
 
Of course, I am a chicken.  So may be you would not have those  things.
