We have a slight consensus (hard to believe for this
group)
that campfires are OK in car campgrounds (where do you
find the wood?) and not in wilderness.

I'd like to add an intermediate view that from
Donner Pass up to
around Snoqualmie Pass, whenever night finds you at
or near an active or recent logging area, you might as
well build a legal safe campfire if you have the time
and
energy (not so likely for many through hikers).

Down dead wood is apt to be abundant. Don't build
new campfire sites though unless you know exactly how
to do so safely and then clean up the next day so
nobody
ever knows. Usually near jeep and logging roads
there
are plenty of existing campfire sites.
