I have left beater cars on the North side of 58 twice for 3-4 days each time 
with no incident.

the beginning or end of a section hike. There is a large level 
gravel/dirt area between Cameron Road and the railroad tracks. There

Here is how it worked in our case:
We left a car in that area for transportation when we 
finished our hike. Within an hour or two, someone filed a "complaint" 
with the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The CHP came out the next 
day, looked the situation over, tagged the car, and authorized a 
towing company to remove the "abandoned" car 72 hours after the time 
of the initial complaint. At that time (within an hour or two) the 
towing company towed the car. Retrieval of the car meant paying a 
$140 towing fee.
Possible complications if you park there:
1. If the car is kept longer, there is also a daily 
storage fee.
2. The car must be retrieved by the registered 
owner. (A spouse does not qualify.) The CHP can negotiate or order 
(It is not clear which.) release of the car once they receive a fax 
of a power of attorney from the registered owner.
3. The towing company yard has a sign that lists 
hours as: M-F 9-5, Sat, Sun by appointment. There is also a fee for 
weekend release of the car.
YOU DO NOT WANT TO PARK HERE.

Questions raised by this incident:
1. Who posted the "complaint?"
2. Would prior notification of the CHP of intent, including 
pick-up date, result in avoidance of these events? Would a note on 
the dashboard have changed the situation, other than encouraging thieves?
3. Would the situation be any different in the small area 
north of Highway 58?
4. Are the same rules applicable, if someone wants to 
enforce things this way, in other trailhead areas with unsigned 
apparent parking areas?
5. What about signed areas? After all, similar rules do 
apply on city streets and nothing was said about this being private 
property. (I do not know whether it is private or public land.)
6. Does anyone know of a nearby area where cars can be left 
without this unpleasantness?
If anyone knows the answers to any of these questions, I would 
appreciate hearing from you. However, I am not trying to encourage 
speculation about what the rules might or should be. I have 
speculated a lot the last few days, and there are better uses for this forum.

This past Friday SAR was called for a missing female hiker from Wisconsin.  
There was some communication errors with her two hiking friends and never made 
it to designated camping spot.  Apparently the miss communication happened 
somewhere around the reroute of the PCT from this Falls Big Bear fires.  She was 
found at the Deep Creek Hot Springs where she was able to cell phone her family.  
There was 4 inches of surprise snow in Running Springs when SAR received that

Hi -

I and about 40 other hikers are "stuck" in Wrightwood.  We came down the Acorn 
Trail yesterday, with about 8 inches of snow on the top (8250 ').  We have been 
told that someone was rescued from Baden-Powell yesterday, and I know several 
people tried to go over, but turned back.

Report of 8 inches of snow at 5000 feet Friday afternoon at Newcombs Ranch
So probably 80 miles of trail snow just from mile 350 to  mile 430.

Just back from an incredible trip with 24 geologists for 7 days on the water, 
amongst the ages of time record and faults and structures and fossils and 
crossbeds and pegmatites and shists and gneiss and mines and ruins and wind and 
rain and heat and cold and rapids and good, good people.  

As any of you who have done this know, words are poor substitutes for 
conveyance.  The best that I can come up with is;

"This is the library of time, and we, the geologists, are the librarians!"

FYI...
I just happened to check one of my bookmarks (Seki food storage) for updates - 
it notes a possible MAJOR change in the regs as early as 2009...  
Some of us have been saying it was coming 'soon' - looks like it will happen in 
2009...  
Plan on having/using a bear canister for the Sierra!

Once when camping with a "newbie" I was awakened in the middle of the night 
by, "HEY, wake up!  I think I hear a bear walking around out there!"



In spite of the fact that bears typically sniff, and snort, and shuffle 
around I wanted to go back to sleep so I groggily I replied, "I don't think 
so.  Bears have great big, soft, fuzzy feet.  If he was walking around out 
there you wouldn't hear a thing."



Mistake.  Big mistake  -- HUGE!  From then on for the rest of the night I 
was awakened with, "HEY, wake up. I don't hear anything!  There must be a 
bear out there!"

It would seem to me to be UPRR property

I'd say UPRR security would be the ones to file a complaint or the CHP 
has standing permission to cite and tow vehicles parked there

I'm sorry for your troubles and would suggest you write the CHP and ask 
them to forward a letter explaining why you parked there and asking it 
be posted no parking - private property yada...yada...yada...

Maybe a "PCT hiker" note on the window would give'em a clue but it's 
difficult or a phone # for contacting a spouse.

On the legal end it seems to me the CHP made no attempt to contact the RO

They can get the RO address and phone from the license number

I had parked my motorcycle at Fenner Camp at the locked gate going up to 
Vincent Gulch when Hiking the High Desert Trail.

Fenner Camp which is a CDF work Camp using state prison inmates 
complained and contacted  my home phone, my wife contacted me by cell 
phone and I moved the vehicle before it was towed.

Seems to me investigation of the law may yield some results in court to 
recover your expenses, but it is Kern County and they are pretty tight 
around there... The Judge is probably the Dad, Brother, Cousin of the cop.
