[pct-l] GPS

Good morning, Amanda,

There are good mapping GPS models available but I don't believe in relying
upon electronic maps, plus I do not like the relatively limited screen size.
For me, it means either very small scale map coverage or, given a larger
scale map, it's like looking down a pipe: I can't grasp a perspective of
where I am.

I prefer a very lite, basic GPS -- a Garmin Geko 201 -- used in conjunction
with maps that have an appropriate navigation grid. Unfortunately, the PCT
Guidebooks do not have such a grid -- yet. The Halfmile maps free from
halfmile at pctmap.net, along with his waypoints list, are available through N.
California, with more to come -- I hope.

As a side note, prior to the hike use the GPS and maps sufficient to become
thoroughly familiar with their features and functions, and learn to trust
them. If you can't/won't do that it is better to leave the GPS at home and
reduce your pack weight by 4 oz.
