Bears can be bluffed or avoided, mountain Lyons will avoid you, rattlesnakes will warn you if you get too close, I have not heard of any scorpion problems, ants can sometimes be a bother as can mosquitoes, so use a net.  Gang members don't want to do the work to get out on the trail.  There is however one dark-hearted fellow whose shadow has fallen across the trail more than one... beware, Switchback the Trail Pirate!
