[pct-l] SuperSecrets - Sleeping Installation

Ground installation is one of the most important things you can do to stay warm at night. In the old days they just cut pine branches and laid them out. In the modern era we do not do that in most of the places we backpack --- "Take only pictures and leave only footprints." philosophy.

I think the closed cell foam pad (www.gossamergear.com) is about the best light weight installation for the backpacker. I put the pads between my ground cloth and tent floor. That way they do not move around a night.

This might be a good plan for the 2009 campaign:
1. A torso foam pad for my 18 ounce backpack to give back support and comfort. It weighs under 4 ounces. I lay this from the hip area to my shoulders at night.
2. A 3/8 inch thick body pad at 5.5 ounces.

I also recommend the pillow over at www.LuxuryLite.com. I put a super soft fleece cover over it. A super soft pillow with clothing bags as additional support is outstanding for a good night's sleep. Also, don't forget the good old Therm-a-Rest Prolite air-foam mattresses. The standard size weighs around 20 ounces. Some backpacker would not leave home without their Therm-a-Rest.

I thank you for your attention.
