I started doing this in northern California. It takes awhile to occur  
to one's self, I think. It's the exact opposite of how you're "taught"  
to backpack and an extremely risky thing to do -- of course, if you  
know the water sources ahead, as on the PCT, it's not that dangerous,  
but there's always a risk.

I hiked with Nimble for awhile in Washington and his pack really was  
tiny -- most of his gear was custom or prototype, he had some cool  
stuff.
