Julie
On the Ouachita Trails check with Charlie Williams - he is the expert on the
Ouachita. His site is www.ouachitamaps.com. I have ridden the western
Ouachitas and am very familiar with that area, including the OT and would be
glad to provide pick up if you need it.

Does anyone know if there is snow (and how much if so) on the PCT near
Goat Rocks, Snoqualmie Pass, and Stehekin? There's a gang of us

====================
The snow conditions in the Stehekin region are a non-event - read that
as clear and easy hiking... The last 'hint' of snow on the
Stehekin-visible side of McGregor Mtn should be completely melted
within a few days (two tiny patches remain). The glacier on it's
back-side is way off-trail from the PCT and not a problem.

Nabor J,
?
We just finished Washington, southbound.? There is no snow to be concerned
about anywhere on the PCT in WA.? A few tiny patches on the Goat Rocks, but
nothing to be concerned about.

Say, speaking of the upcoming Kickoff next April at Lake Morena. I think I
will make free Switchback's World Famous Umbrella Holders for anyone that
needs one. They weigh about an ounce or less.

I am now working on my agenda at the Kickoff Pirate's Lair. Hummmm. Cabin
fever must be setting in. But my big expedition to Tuolumne Meadows will
take care of that. I think I will go in early October for more of a chance
of weather challenges. Maybe I will get lucky and have a big storm --
Mother Nature flexing her muscles. Scaring off all the pilgrims, but
exciting us mountainmen.

Best regards, Switchback the Trail Pirate

Try the album "Tea for the Tilerman": two songs come to mind: " On the road
to find out" and "miles from nowhere". Wouldn't be surprised to find out
Cat Stevens was thru hiking when he wrote these.

Say Switchback,
I saw a ''Homeless Bum'' at McDonald's the other day looking for a
handout, so I bought him a hamburger instead
of giving him money.
I always do that, this way they get something to eat instead of
something to drink.
After I left I started thinking, ''funny'', I never saw a ''Homeless
Bum'' with trekking poles before.....I wonder if he was
''Hiker Trash'' instead?.....They all look alike, kind off, ....grubby,
scuzzy, dirty and malnourished.

Say, how DO YOU tell "grubby ''Hiker Trash'' from a scuzzy
''Homeless Bum???

Fortune has thrown me a loopy curve ball and I now find that I wlll have 6
weeks off starting in mid-November.

I was hoping to take this time off in the spring to do some section-hiking
on the PCT but am now re-thinking my plan.

Are there any parts of the trail that I can count on being hikeable in this
mid-November time-frame?

I have a section to make up from Paradise Cafe to Fuller Ridge and another
from Tuolumne meadows to Sonora pass.

Hello All!

I'm a Bay Area native currently residing in central Arkansas, and on the
hunt for recommended backpacking trails in the area.? I wouldn't say I'm
bored with our nearby hikes, but certainly in need of more variety and
longer mileage.? A few of us are considering hiking the Ouachita Trail this
fall in preparation for the 2009 PCT season - has anyone done this trail and
have any advice as far as weather, gear, water, east-or westbound, etc??
November is looking like our best shot to thru-hike it this year, but if you
recommend otherwise I'd love to hear why!

Many thanks,

--Julie
