think about this...Bob at Hikertown today asked me how many square miles is the PCT. hmm...never thought of that.. if the trail is 2 feet wide, the whole trail would fit inside a square just a tad bit bigger than?ONE?square mile. hows THAT for perspective???

Token writes:?When I'm not hiking, I do aircraft weight and balance for a major
Seattle based aerospace firm.? The external primer and paint on a wide body
aircraft can easily reach several hundred pounds to upwards of 1,000 lbs.

?

Typical paint is 0.008 lbs per square foot per 0.001" (mil)?of thickness.?
Typical thickness of a top coat of paint on an aircraft is 0.003 to 0.005".? I
figure your tent stake painting is probably similar thickness - call it 0.004"
for an average.

?

So, knowing that, you should be able to figure out pretty easily the weight of
the paint.?

?

Weight in pounds = 0.008 * 4 * stake length in inches * (stake diameter in
inches)^2 * ( 1 / 144 conversion from square feet to square inches) * (3.14 / 4)

?

Multiply by 454 to get the weight in grams.

??

Example:

Call it 6" long stake 0.125" in diameter:

Wt = 0.008 * 4 * 6 * 0.125^2 * (1/144) * 3.14 / 4 = .000016 lbs = 0.007 grams
per stake.

-----------------------------------------------------

Switchback replies:?Yes, thos
e are the?calculations I use too.........................
:-)

Say, I just remembered that I only paint the top portion of the shelter stakes,
so the weight is actually less than 0.007 grams per stake.? Some people only
have me paint the very tops of their stakes to save paint weight.? Now that is
what I call serious light weight backpacking.? I remember AsABat trying to put
painted and unpainted shelter stakes on my electronic scale to see if he could
determine the extra weight of the florescent paint.?

That sucks...that was one of the better buffets on the trail. A waffle piled
high with berries and whipped cream. Hope they change it back.

we can now add;

David,

In 1977 my family did a loop from Road's End over Avalanche Pass to Colby
Pass, down the Kern-Kaweah Valley, then up the headwaters of the Kern and
over cross-country Harrison Pass and back down to Road's End. My husband
Scout and I hiked this again in 2004, with some added cross-country and
trail miles through Sequoia, to make it a longer hike.

This is a great route through gorgeous country! We definitely plan to go
back someday. In 2004 we found that the trail east from Colby Pass was not
in great shape, but definitely follow-able. There had been a trail crew
working on the trail up to Colby Lake from the west side, so maybe they've
improved the trail on the east side as well by now.

I haven't hiked the 3.5 miles from the Kern River over to the John Muir
Trail north of Crabtree Meadow, but it looks straightforward.

Have a great time!

-Frodo
