Ben,
Come ahead.....It's been open for over a week now.....I thought I'd reported
it so on or around 8.24, but looking back, I see I just answered Ma and Pa
Kettle's E-mail. I'm sorry...It ain't perty, but it's there, it's open and
there's water at both Caches 44 and 22. The burned area begins north of
Subway Cave and extends about two to two and a half miles north of the
trailhead at the top of Hwy 44. It didn't burn very far out into the old
1987 "Lost" fire. There is another section of the trail that was apparently
burned over as well, by another of the 39 fires set the night of Aug. 1.
The thunder storm that night was the worst I've ever seen or heard. The
strike that started the Sugar Loaf Complex touched down in at least two
places, which grew together and spread in all four directions before a heavy
downpour on 8.06 worked a small miracle, or I suspect, given the strength of
the winds we had for several days after the firefighters gained control, it
might still be burning. The danger in most places around the Hat Creek
Valley was properly doused that night, just in time for large numbers of our
teams to be redirected to the fire burning in the Santa Cruz Mt's along the
coast...the one that required the evacuation of Bonny Doon.
I'd like to know the status of the fire that was reported in the Marbles on
8.27. Is the trail still closed there?
