I agree with Gary.  Too much dirt does not make my feet happy.  It obviously
works for a lot of people, which is great, but not me.  But then, I haven't
done much desert hiking yet, either, so maybe I'll change my tune when I get
down that way.

I also believe that a lot of people hike in footwear that's too small, which
causes all kinds of problems.  For some reason there's this idea that your
foot shouldn't be able to move around *at all* in your shoes but my
experience is that having too-small shoes is usually far more destructive
than having them a tad large.  Too put it another way, over the years I've
heard many people say, "I had horrible blisters until I got larger shoes."
I can't remember ever hearing someone say, "I had horrible blisters until I
got smaller shoes."  Maybe someone has but it's not a common occurrence, for
sure.
